Playwriting with Dyslexia
Writing the Non-Linear Play

Break out of chronological storytelling

Rework an existing play draft

Build structure through image, memory, and emotion

This 8-week workshop invites writers of all backgrounds—dyslexic or not—to harness visual thinking, associative leaps, and big-picture imagination as tools for bold, non-linear storytelling. Instead of forcing narratives into strict chronological order, students will explore how plays can be structured through memory, theme, image, rhythm, and emotional logic. Working from a completed draft of a play, participants will re-approach their work using non-linear techniques such as fragmented timelines, recurring motifs, overlapping dialogue, and spatial storytelling. Through guided exercises, collaborative labs, and focused feedback, writers will discover new ways into their material that unlock clarity, depth, and originality.

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Develop practical strategies for organizing complex narratives without relying on rigid structure

  • Strengthen revision practices using tools such as voice recording, physical improvisation, and

  • alternative drafting methods

  • Build confidence in their creative instincts and unique voice

  • Apply techniques like scene loglines (summarizing each scene in one sentence) and

  • character action mapping (tracking what each character does, wants, and what changes) to clarify

  • emotional and narrative arcs

  • Leave with a reimagined section or version of their play using non-linear techniques

Margot is a Latinx playwright, screenwriter, and educator from Queens, New York, creating bold, non-linear theater that blends poetry, music, and movement with narrative. Margot's work explores identity, queerness, desire, and social justice through visually driven, emotionally precise storytelling.

As a teaching artist, Margot empowers students to discover their voices by connecting storytelling to how they already think across disciplines, learning styles, and lived experiences. This approach centers inclusive, student-driven learning and practical, hands-on methods that help writers build stories through image, rhythm, memory, and emotional logic.

Margot's play Olvídame received the Kennedy Center Award for Hip-Hop Theater, Distinguished Achievement in Latinx Playwriting, New Harmony Writers Residency, and was a Terrence McNally New Works Incubator Semi-Finalist, and has been presented with Latinx Playwrights Circle at Ensemble Studio Theatre, with workshops at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning MTP and upcoming in summer 2026 at IATI Theater (Cimientos). Hi Bi premiered virtually at Dixon Place’s HOT! Queer Festival 2020, earning Playbill recognition as an LGBTQIA+ Artist to Watch.

Margot holds an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University, where they taught, and is a member of the Dramatists Guild, WGAE Indie Film Caucus, Latinx Playwrights Circle, and happily volunteers on the New Harmony Projects Alumni Connectivity Committee.
